Paul and Davis were originally set to meet at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia; however, Most Valuable Promotions, the promoter of the bout, withdrew their request to stage the fight in Georgia on Tuesday.
Paul competes at the 200-pound cruiserweight division, while Davis is boxing’s 135-pound WBA lightweight champion. The 60-plus-pound weight discrepancy between the pair was a major issue for the Georgia Athletic and Entertainment Commission, which was set to rule Sept. 18 on whether the bout could proceed in the state. Paul’s promotional company, MVP, had requested a rule waiver to bypass the weight-difference rule and needed a 3-2 majority at Thursday’s meeting.
Rick Thompson, chairman of the Georgia commission, went on record earlier this month with USA Today to voice his disapproval of the contest and likely wouldn’t have voted in MVP’s favor. The weight details of the planned match, as well as whether it will be an exhibition or a sanctioned professional fight, are still unknown.

Paul (12-1, 7 KOs) is also in talks to face former unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua in early 2026 after his fight with Davis. The internet star-turned-boxer defeated his second former world champion, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., in June by unanimous decision in Anaheim, California, to earn a No. 14 cruiserweight ranking with the WBA.
Davis (30-0-1, 28 KOs) was expected to rematch Lamont Roach in August after the pair fought to a controversial draw this past March, following Davis’ infamous kneel-down controversy. The two-division champion, however, was forced to trade a fight date for a court date after being arrested for a misdemeanor battery-domestic violence charge in July. The alleged victim in the case subsequently dropped the charge, but the issue forced the cancelation of a second match between “Tank” and Roach.
