NCAA permanently bans 3 Fresno State and San Jose State basketball players as part of gambling investigation

Three basketball players who spent time with either Fresno State or San Jose State were permanently banned by the NCAA on Wednesday as part of a gambling investigation, the organization announced.

Mykell Robinson, Steven Vasquez and Jalen Weaver were deemed permanently ineligible by the NCAA. All three players were released from their teams and are no longer enrolled at their schools following the investigation.

In its ruling, the NCAA determined “the student-athletes bet on their own games, one another’s games and/or provided information that enabled others to do so during the 2024-25 regular season.” The NCAA found evidence that two of those players manipulated their own performances to ensure certain bets were won.

The investigation was launched after Fresno State and a sports betting integrity monitor flagged suspicious bets placed on Robinson’s stats. The NCAA found evidence that Robinson and Vasquez, who were roommates at Fresno State during the 2023-24 season, shared information to try and win prop bets.

The NCAA uncovered text messages sent between Robinson and Vasquez in January in which Robinson — who still played for Fresno State — said he would underperform in certain stat categories during a regular-season game. Robinson, Vasquez — who played for San Jose State during the 2024-25 season — and a third party reportedly bet $2,200 on Robinson to underperform in those areas. The three received a $15,950 payout after winning those bets.

Robinson was also accused of placing 13 daily fantasy sports bets on his own performance throughout the season. Robinson reportedly included those bets in parlays, one of which paid out $618.

Robinson also placed bets on Weaver — one of Robinson’s teammates at Fresno State. The NCAA claimed both players exchanged information on their betting lines prior to a December 2024 game. Weaver reportedly placed a $50 bet on a parlay that included his stats, Robinson’s stats and a third student-athlete’s stats. Weaver won $260 after the parlay hit.

Vasquez and Robinson did not cooperate with NCAA investigators. Weaver participated in the investigation and “agreed to his violation,” per the NCAA.

Fresno State finished with a 6-26 record last season. San Jose State went 15-20 during the 2024-25 season.
