Adriana Lima continues to kick butt in the modeling world thanks to, well, kicking butt.
The 38-year-old star explained that in order to find the right fitness routine, you need to “have fun with it.”
“I started with yoga. That did not work out too well,” Lima said during a Q&A at the launch of the new LQD Cell Shatter Puma sneakers at Refinery29 on Thursday. “I found boxing at age 19, and I fell in love with it, because it fit my personality.”
She continued, “[Boxing] takes me to a Zen place and it keeps me active. It’s empowering for me.”
The former Victoria’s Secret Angel explained that hitting the gym brought her “power as a woman.”
“I really felt strong, not only physically speaking but also … my mind, because there are days that I do not feel like going to the gym at all,” she said. “There are types of exercises that I also am not able to do it right away, and I train my mind to not give up.”
The supermodel also revealed that one of the biggest challenges she has overcome in her career is fighting back against aging out.
“When I started the modeling world … I knew that one day it would be finished. That’s the usual part. But I did not want that to happen for me as empowerment for women,” she said. “Usually [in] modeling, there’s an age gap, and I wanted to break through that.”
That is why at age 18, Lima was focused on taking care of herself.
“I thought, ‘OK, I need to take care of myself … Take care of my nutrition, my mental health, my physical appearance.”
She added, “I wanted to use the modeling industry to show that women are beautiful at any stage of their life…Right now I’m 38 so I don’t know in which category I fit in … but I’m still active as a model, and I hope I will keep it going longer, as long as I can be.”
While Lima hung up her Angel wings in November 2018, the model continues to pose for cover shoots and fashion campaigns and will be launching a secret project that involves something women can “put it on, you know, on your everyday life.”
