Ballon d'Or 2022 nominees: Messi-Neymar not on shortlist

Argentine superstar Lyon's Messi and PSG team-mate Neymar is not on the shortlist of 30 footballers nominated for the 2022 Ballon d'Or. Messi is not on the list for the first time since 2005.

Karim Benzema, who led Real Madrid to the Champions League and La Liga titles last season, is definitely on the list. He is considered as the favorite in the race to win this year's Ballon d'Or.

Why Messi-Neymar's Ballon d'Or is not named?

Ballon d'Or rules were revised last year. According to those revised rules, individual performances will be looked at first to judge the best player. Team performance will come later. As such, even though Messi won League One last season, his personal performance was not good.

France Football magazine's deputy editor-in-chief Emmanuel Bouan said, "Messi was discussed during the preparation of this list of 30 people. But the new criteria set for this award were not in favor of Messi. No longer considering a player's entire career, the new model considers a season rather than an entire year, which is why Messi's Copa America win on July 11, 2021, was not taken into account. '
