After several months of rumors and speculation, 2024 could finally be the year David Benavidez faces Canelo Alvarez.
Canelo arguably had a smooth 2023 thanks to comfortable wins over John Ryder and Jermell Charlo to remain WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO super middleweight world champion.
Meanwhile the “Red Flag” defeated Caleb Plant by unanimous decision in March to retain the WBC interim super middleweight title. On November 25, he will face Demetrius Andrade in a mandatory defense of his championship.
In an interview with CNN, Benavidez had this to say about the opportunity to face Canelo in 2024.
“I’ve earned the opportunity to fight him. I’m ready for this fight, I know it’s a fight that everyone is waiting for. It will be a tough fight, but I have what it takes to beat him,” Benavidez explained to CNN.
Beyond the rivalry, the Mexican-born American recognized Alvarez as one of the best of the era.
“I’ve always given him credit. He is a legend, these are the boxers I want to face.”
In the event of the fight taking place, the 26-year-old believes it would be very close and like a war.
“I have a lot of people who support me, he also has people who support him. It will be a very big fight, a real war.
Andrade, the last hurdle before Canelo
Should he defeat his compatriot at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas next week, Benavidez knows that he would be taking a key step towards facing Canelo.
“Andrade has a lot of technique, good defense, throws a lot and is very hungry to win, but I have more hunger, more strength, more speed and I’m going to show the world what level I am at,” he concluded.
“I’m focused and I trained hard. I know he has a lot of experience, he’s been boxing for a long time, but so have I. That’s not going to say anything about the fight. That’s not going to say anything about the fight, I’m 100% ready to win this Saturday.
