The 1st stage of the Giro is an 8 kilometres individual time trial. Following the start in the old town of Bologna, the riders tackle the Colle Guardia at kilometre 6.2. The haul up to the Santuario Madonna di San Luca at the top is 2 kilometres and the average slops sit at 11%, while the steepest ramps are 18%.

After a lot of pre-race confidence, Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) did not have the best of starts to the Giro d’Italia 2019. However, towards the end of the second week, the Brit started making up for a lost time, clawing back vital seconds on stages 14 and 15. Richard Carapaz stormed to the stage 14 victory and took the pink jersey, which he will carry into tomorrow’s queen stage as the Ecuadorian and his GC rivals face another tough test.
