UNC vs South Carolina Women's Basketball Game Preview

The Tar Heels (25-6) are making their first Sweet 16 appearance since 2015, when they also took on top-seeded South Carolina in the Greensboro Region. That year, the Gamecocks won 67-65. The previous year, UNC won a Sweet 16 matchup with South Carolina played in Stanford, Calif., 65-58, making this the third regional semifinal in a row in which Carolina has faced its neighbor to the south.

No. 5-seeded UNC defeated Arizona, 63-45, in the Wildcats’ backyard Monday night to advance to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2015. Next up for the Tar Heels: A showdown with No. 1 overall seed, South Carolina. The Gamecocks are the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA tournament and the favorites to cut down the nets in April. UNC has been one of the hottest teams through the first weekend of March Madness.

The Tar Heels started the tournament strong with a 79-66 win over Stephen F. Austin on March 19 behind 28 points from DeJa Kelly. UNC then knocked out Arizona convincingly 66-43 in the second round on Monday, March 21, as Kennedy Todd-Williams led the Tar Heels with 19 points.

“It’s remarkable,” North Carolina head coach Courtney Banghart said according to The Associated Press. “Led by Deja, they really had to take a chance with the program in a bit of turmoil. We had to kind of piece it together because it’s early in our rebirth and these guys worked really hard.”
