Coronavirus was a large-enough barrier to getting NHL players to Latvia for the 2021 IIHF World Championship, slated to begin (gulp) this Friday, May 21st. (Vancouver and Calgary skaters are pretty much screwed out of Worlds participation, at least in Group Stage, thanks to playing-out the saddest string of NHL regular-season games ever right on through mid-May.)

Michael Dyck, a member of the team that won silver in 2019, has been named as an assistant coach and will support the coaching team led by head coach Gerard Gallant. The Canadian team were due to travel to Riga yesterday and were tested three times for COVID-19 before making the trip. Hockey Canada said all members of its delegation would self-isolate at the hotel for three days before entering a team quarantine on May 18.

Ice Hockey World Championship Preview

USA Hockey is expected to win a share of Olympic gold for the first time in women’s hockey after confirming it will bring its top-level national team to the 2018 World Championship.

The country’s top league, the National Women’s Hockey League, announced last month that it would skip this year’s world championship and just hold its four-team tournament in the U.S. in 2018, which will be about four months after the Olympics. The other two leagues are expected to follow suit, and that means USA Hockey and others are likely to have to change the format of the world championship.
