Lowry’s hat trick fuels UNCP soccer past Davis & Elkins

Sep. 5—ELKINS, W.Va. — Abigail Lowry’s first collegiate hat trick was more than enough to propel UNC Pembroke (1-1-0) past Davis and Elkins (0-2-0) on Sunday afternoon. Lowry came on as a sub in the 23rd minute and completed her hat trick 15 minutes later.

Anna Grossheim and Mercy Bell each recorded a goal and an assist, while Freya Lodge Whitham rounded out the goal scoring for the Black & Gold. Reagan Carr and Bea Vazquez each recorded their first collegiate points with assists as well.

The scoring began in the 10th minute, when Grossheim’s through ball found a streaking Carr down the right side, who found a wide open Bell in front of the net to put the Braves ahead.

A beautiful corner kick from Grossheim in the 23rd minute found the foot of Freya Lodge Whitham, who one touched it into the back of the net for a 2-0 Braves lead.

A minute later, a perfectly placed free kick from Grossheim snuck over the Davis & Elkins goalkeeper’s hands and just under the crossbar.

Lowry put away a Mercy Bell pass in the 26th minute for the first of her three consecutive goals.

Lowry made a move to get free down the right side and fired a shot that deflected off the netminder’s hands into the back of the net, making it a 5-0 score in the 32nd minute.

Lowry found herself free in the left side of the box in the 38th minute after a ball from Bea Vazquez, and delivered a strike over the goalkeeper’s hands to put the finishing touches on her hat trick.

Lowry totaled four shots on goal in the match. Grossheim recorded her 26th career goal, while Bell tallied her 10th career goal in Sunday’s contest.

Freshman Reagan Carr and redshirt sophomore Bea Vazquez each recorded their first collegiate points with an assist each.

The Braves scored six goals in a half for the first time since September 12, 2015 against Georgia Southwestern.

Nineteen players logged playing time for the Black & Gold in Sunday’s triumph, including redshirt junior Anna Bass who came in for the second half and combined on the clean sheet with Chiara Coppin.

Sunday marked the first time the Braves faced the Senators.

UNCP will return home Saturday to begin Conference Carolinas play, as the Braves will host Converse for Alumni Weekend and Youth Soccer Day. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
