New Zealand dreamed of winning the first match and winning the Test series against South Africa. However, that was not possible. South Africa ended the series with a 1-1 draw after winning the second and final Test by 196 runs.

As a result, New Zealand's chances of winning the first Test series against South Africa increased.

New Zealand's target for victory was a Himalayan score of 426 runs. But the hosts scored 227 runs in the second innings. Devon Conway (92) missed a century for eight runs. 44 runs came from Tom Blandell's bat. Keshab Maharaj, Marco Janssen and Kagiso Rabada took three wickets each.

Kagiso Rabada was named Man of the Match for taking 8 wickets in two innings and scoring 53 runs. Matt Henry won the series best award with 58 runs and 14 wickets in two matches.
