Newcastle United players waiting to hear who will take pre-season training after Rafa Benitez's exit
Newcastle United players will learn the identity of a new caretaker boss in the coming days as the Toon squad report back for pre-season.
Pre-season training won’t actually start until next week with Thursday and Friday scheduled to be fitness and medical testing with the remainder of the back-room staff.
Tactical work will not begin until the start of the week after, which gives Newcastle extra time to assess the options in front of them to replace Rafa Benitez.
It is expected that Neil Redfearn would be the man to take charge in a caretaker situation but that has not been rubber stamped at this stage.
Planning in the background has continued with staff members such Jamie Harley, Michael Harding, Derek Wright and Dr Paul Catterson continuing with the plans in place ahead of the club’s trip to China in mid-July.
United are also believed to have asked senior players such as Dwight Gayle, Achraf Lazaar, Jack Colback, Henri Saivet and Rolando Aarons to report to the first team HQ rather than the Academy where some of them had previously been training when not on loan.
For now those players will have a clean slate as a new manager may want to give them another chance.
But there is still uncertainty in the air for other squad members.
It is expected that Manchester United will make their move for Sean Longstaff in the coming days while the futures of Ayoze Perez, Joselu, Isaac Hayden and Jonjo Shelvey will soon be thrashed out.
