Simmons Athletics: Rowing Show Support for Ukraine

The Simmons athletic department and its rowing community have a unique connection to Ukraine. Andrii Ivanchuck was named head coach of the Sharks rowing program in July 2021. He took over at the helm, eight months after the passing of beloved former coach, Nikolay Kurmakov.

Ivanchuk and Kurmakov immigrated to the United States from Kyiv, Ukraine. The pair each represented their home country on the international stage as members of the Ukrainian national team.

In response to the recent events, the student athletes of Simmons rowing called on alumnae and the Boston rowing community to participate. They began making targeted donations to support Ukrainian hospitals and medical facilities through Sunflower of Peace.

Sunflower of Peace is a Boston-based 501(c)(3) providing medical assistance to Ukrainian orphans and humanitarian aid that will be used by the paramedics and doctors in the areas affected by violence.

If you would like to make a donation, please visit the link: Sunflower of Peace.

Additionally, a Ukrainian flag will hang in the tank room of the Holmes Sports Center as well as at Riverside Boat Club as a symbol of solidarity between the rowing community and the citizens of Ukraine.
