Jorge Vilda‘s time at the helm of Spain’s women’s national team has come to an end.
The RFEF made the news official on Tuesday and comes amidst the backlash from the ‘Rubiales case’. Acting president Pedro Rocha notified Vilda of the decision in a meeting held between the two on Tuesday morning at the federation headquarters.
The 42-year-old from Madrid thus says goodbye after eight years at the helm of the women’s national team. He arrived in 2015 to replace Ignacio Quereda after his spells at the helm of the U17 and U19. And he does it just a few weeks after winning the most important title in the history of Spanish women’s football: the World Cup held in Australia and New Zealand.
Despite the contract renewal offered by Luis Rubiales on Friday, August 25 (four seasons at a rate of half a million euros per year), the current RFEF Board headed by Pedro Rocha has decided to terminate Vilda’s association with the women’s team after Rubales was suspended.
Although the offer was not valid at the judicial level, the coach has had to negotiate his settlement since he had a contract until August 2024.
The controversy that has surrounded the coach over the last year, as well as his applause for Luis Rubiales during his speech in the Assembly.
Vilda was the third coach the Spanish team has had in its 32-year history. The man from Madrid (2015-2023) took over from Ignacio Quereda (1988-2015), who in turn did so from Teodoro Nieto (1981-1988).
In his eight years as coach, he has directed a total of 108 official matches with 75 wins, 16 draws and 17 losses, as well as 310 goals for and 58 against, achieving a World Cup (2023), as well as an Algarve Cup. (2017) and a Cyprus Cup (2018).
