Sri Lanka have appointed former captain Lasith Malinga as their bowling strategy coach for the upcoming Australia series. The former pacer will be in the team's dugout for the T20 and ODI series against Ajit.
A statement from the Sri Lanka Cricket Board said,
This is not the first time Malinga has been in the role, having played the same role in the team's five-match T20 series against Australia this year. Sri Lanka lost the series 4-1, but the bowling was great. Only once in the entire series was Ajira able to score more than 160 runs.
The statement further said, "Sri Lankan cricket believes that Malinga's vast experience and skill in death bowling, especially in the T20 format, is going to help the team in this important series."
Malinga was one of the legendary fast bowlers of limited-overs cricket in Sri Lanka. He retired from all forms of cricket in 2021. He was also the highest wicket-taker in T20I in retirement. Shakib Al Hasan broke his record of 107 wickets in 84 matches.
Working as a coach in Sri Lanka, Malinga also has experience coaching in the IPL. He was the mentor of Mumbai Indians in 2018 IPL. He then coached the Rajasthan Royals in the recently concluded IPL.
