Pizza Is For Closers

Before the Maulers took the field they found themselves embroiled in controversy. Their game against the Bandits was postponed due to weather and in the original time slot, they aired an episode of Untied By Football. This is a docuseries show essentially the USFL’s answer to the NFL Hard Knocks series. In a now-viral clip, Mauler’s head coach Kirby Wilson cut running back De’Veon Smith for requesting Pizza for his meal. “I don't eat chicken salad,” said Smith, in the clip. USFL players are barred from criticizing the league publicly as a stipulation of their contracts. We may never know if the Mauler QB calling out “Chicken Salad” as part of his cadence was in support of Smith or not. USFL players are in a bubble in hotels and not paid much. It does seem unfair to end this man's dreams over a lunch order.

The Maulers did release a statement saying Smith violated 3 team rules in 24 hours, but Smith maintains his innocence. Fans on Twitter seem to be taking Smith’s side calling for his reinstatement. Popular radio show The Breakfast Club dubbed Wilson as "Donkey of the Day" for cutting Smith over not wanting to eat Chicken Salad.

USFL Pittsburgh Maulers vs Philadelphia Stars Preview

The Stars will face another tough defense in the Maulers. The Maulers may not have scored a touchdown but the defense did their part. They got stops and a couple of interceptions. Look for the Stars to try to score early and establish the running game. Running back Darnell Holland had an amazing 42-yard touchdown run against the Breakers. Look for him to make another big play and establish a running game which he was unable to do last week. Receiver Bug Howard had 3 catches and the Stars' only passing touchdown. The Stars also earned the first safety in the USFL and their kicker Matt Mengel went 1 of 3 in field goal attempts. The key for the Stars will be establishing a running game and improving on Field Goals.

There have been reports that kickers are complaining the game balls have uneven weight distribution due to the chip inserted for tracking stats. So we’ll see if the league responds and if they remove the chips from “k-balls”

The Maulers will have to get things together on Offense. They had trouble converting on 3rd downs and made mistakes in the RedZone that cost them their scoring chances. Even when the defense got stops and interceptions they could turn it into points on the offensive side of the ball. There is some question if the Pizza incident with Smith cause coach Wilson to lose the locker room. We’ll see if he can turn things around in week two. In the USFL North division, there is still room to come back and make a run at the playoffs. Let's see what adjustments Wilson and the Maulers make Saturday.
